Development

Our History

In 1956 our company began with two roofers, Duke Burns and John Scalo, who were ready to make a name for themselves in the Pittsburgh roofing business. As part of their investments as business partners, John and Duke started a real estate development company, Burns & Scalo Real Estate Services, investing in real estate with small, single- and double-unit apartment buildings. James (Jim) Scalo, through his college years and upon graduation, worked for his father’s contracting firm. Soon, James took charge of the company-owned real estate portfolio, which included apartment buildings, commercial offices, warehouses and land. He restructured the holdings by selling, buying and building new facilities. James expanded the business by taking on the management of larger properties and acting as a commercial developer. In 1985, James was named Director of Development, and in recognition of his contributions to growing the firm, he was named President of Burns Scalo Real Estate Services in 1990.

Today and Tomorrow

Today, Burns Scalo Real Estate has expanded it’s investment and services portfolio to include commercial office structures, flex and warehouse buildings, apartment buildings, storage facilities, residential condominiums and build-to-suit opportunities and has grown to become the premier commercial real estate firm in the Greater Pittsburgh Area. The company owns and manages over 5 million square feet of commercial real estate for both private investment and third-party owners. Burns Scalo Real Estate also offers clients services such as tenant representation, brokerage and investment services, development services, construction management and asset management. We take pride in offering the best of the best in customer service, management, development, and brokerage. Burns Scalo Real Estate looks into the future with more growth and success for multiple generations to come.
